My Obsession With Chinese “Started With a Kiss”

Stars of Nail Clipper Romance

If you visit my site with any regularity, you will quickly realize that I am a fan of Taiwanese star, Jiro Wang (汪东城, Wāng Dōngchéng).  This is largely because I stumbled upon a drama years ago in which he starred, 惡作劇之吻 (“It Started With a Kiss”).  This drama, and others, sparked an obsession for Chinese learning in me that is now a raging mania…thus, the name of my website. LOL!

“It Started With a Kiss” (惡作劇之吻, Èzuòjù Zhī Wěn) was based on the first 10 volumes of the Japanese manga series Mischievous Kiss”  (イタズラな Kiss, “Itazura na Kiss”) written by Kaoru Tada.  I enjoyed the story so much that I ended up seeking it out in all of its many forms.  You can find an anime version of the manga series, with English subtitles, on YouTube.  There is also a live-action Japanese version and a Korean adaptation.  As for me, however, I am partial to the Taiwanese version.

The Taiwanese cast reprised their roles in a sequel entitled,“They Kiss Again” (惡作劇2吻 È Zuò Jù Èr Wěn).  It too was a hit in Taiwan, and its leading actress, Ariel Lin, won a Golden Bell for her performance.

Recently, the buzz online is that the Taiwanese entertainment industry will be remaking the series due to the original and its sequel’s (惡作劇2吻 È Zuò Jù Èr Wěn “They Kiss Again”) huge success.   There were are also rumors of a “part 3” involving the original cast, but that has since been debunked.  UPDATE:  Taiwan’s remake “Fall in Love at First Kiss” (一吻定情, Yī wěn dìng qíng) was released in 2019, but it did not outshine the original.

If you decide to watch “It Started With a Kiss,” you may notice that the now 38-year-old, Jiro Wang’s looks have changed greatly over the years, but I think he is still just precious.  Chinese people age so well.

With all that said, here is my English translation of Sad Pacific sung by Jiro Wang. This song is from the original soundtrack for a film I have not seen: “A Nail Clipper Romance” (指甲刀人魔, Zhǐjiǎ dāo rén mó).  I hope you enjoy it!

You can also check out all the songs I have translated here.
