大家好。 Hello everyone, I’m Ashley, the creator of Mandarin Mania, and this is the story of how my obsession with Mandarin inspired both the website’s name and its purpose.
How It All Began
My fascination with Mandarin began in one of the least likely places imaginable: sprawled on the sofa watching television.
Years ago, my sister fell headfirst into Asian dramas and became determined to take me with her. She kept insisting that I watch one, and I kept refusing. Sitting through an entire show while reading subtitles sounded suspiciously like work, and television was supposed to be an escape from it.
Eventually, persistence won. My sister was certain I would love Asian dramas if I would just give them a chance, and by then I had grown increasingly disillusioned with American television. So I surrendered and agreed to watch one.
That drama was an Indian one, full of music, dancing, color, and enough spectacle to make subtitles seem like a very minor inconvenience. From there, things escalated quickly. Korean dramas came next, followed by K-pop, and before long I was completely swept up in the Korean Wave. Then came Taiwanese idol dramas and, finally, the sweeping historical dramas of mainland China.
Before I knew it, my sofa had become my passport-free gateway to Asia. One reluctant viewing had somehow turned into countless episodes, increasingly late nights and a very questionable sleep schedule. By then, there was no going back.
Becoming “Mandarin Maniac” Ashley
As it turned out, my sister had been right all along. What began as skeptical curiosity soon grew into a fascination that extended well beyond television. China, in particular, captured my attention: Its culture, history, music, writing system and its language. The more I encountered Mandarin, the more I wanted to understand it.
I started affectionately calling myself “Mandarin Maniac” Ashley because, by that point, the description was remarkably accurate. I was genuinely crazy about Mandarin. The nickname eventually inspired the name of this website, Mandarin Mania. But the website grew from something more meaningful: I wanted to turn my own enthusiasm into a resource that could make learning Mandarin easier for other people.
The People Who Inspired Mandarin Mania
Early in my Mandarin studies, I began attending meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, eager for every opportunity to surround myself with the language. There, I met people who were learning Chinese so they could communicate with Chinese speakers in their ministry. Although I wasn’t in a position to become part of their congregation, their commitment left a lasting impression on me. I may not have been able to join them, but I knew I wanted to support what they were doing in some meaningful way.
Many had deliberately chosen a simpler way of life so they could devote more of their time and energy to helping others. That commitment often meant living on limited means, leaving little room in the budget for costly Mandarin courses or private lessons.
The Project That Started It All
One particularly kind person gave me a copy of Basic Theocratic Expressions, a book compiled by one of the brothers, in hopes that it would help me with my Chinese. It contained more than 7,500 words and phrases. Although some of the vocabulary was Bible-related, most of it was practical, everyday language that could be useful to almost any Mandarin learner.
That thoughtful gift inspired my first major project.
I decided to have a native Chinese speaker record every word and phrase in the book. Mandarin is a language you simply cannot learn well from the written page alone. You need to hear how the words actually sound, especially when pronunciation and tones can change meaning entirely. Thousands of useful expressions were already there; what the book needed was a voice.
As the recordings began to take shape, I realized I needed a way to share them with anyone who might find them useful. What started as a practical solution to that problem soon became something much bigger. In 2018, Mandarin Mania was born.
Bringing Free Mandarin Resources Together
As I continued studying Mandarin, I found myself collecting free Chinese-learning resources for my own use. Once Mandarin Mania existed, it seemed natural to share those resources with the people I had met at the Kingdom Hall, as well as with other independent learners looking for affordable ways to study.
The more resources I gathered, the more obvious the problem became. There were plenty of helpful lists and directories online, but the best materials were scattered across countless websites. Finding them often meant digging through one list after another, never knowing what useful resource might still be hiding somewhere else. I wanted to make that process easier.
What began as a way to help a small group of dedicated learners gradually grew into something much larger: A resource directory designed to make Mandarin learning easier and more accessible to anyone who wanted to learn.
Mandarin Mania began with a television show I was reluctant to watch. It found its name in my love of all things Mandarin, but it found its purpose in a desire to help others learn.
Years later, that purpose still guides everything I create, collect and share here.
