Cloze Practice Exercises
Clozemaster makes Chinese vocabulary practice more challenging by placing words in context instead of teaching them in isolation. Learners complete thousands of sentences by choosing or typing the missing word, with options for both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. It’s especially useful for learners who already know some Chinese and want repeated exposure to vocabulary and sentence patterns. Just keep in mind that some of its community-sourced sentences can be awkward or unnatural, so it’s best used for practice rather than as an authority on natural Chinese.

Read the sentence, type the missing word based on context, and check your answer before moving to the next question. You can practice in either Simplified or Traditional Chinese, and translations are available when you need help understanding the sentence.

Test Your Chinese Level with Cloze
ClozCHI is a free, research-validated cloze test designed to estimate Chinese proficiency, especially reading ability. Instead of choosing from multiple-choice answers, you read Chinese passages with characters removed and fill in each blank using the surrounding context. The test includes three passages that increase in difficulty.
ClozCHI is a downloadable assessment rather than an interactive website. To use it, visit the ClozCHI OSF repository, download the test materials, and complete the passages without using a dictionary or other assistance if you want to follow the researchers' testing method. For each blank, enter one appropriate Chinese character or its pinyin. When finished, use the provided answer materials to check your responses. More than one answer may be acceptable for some blanks.
ClozCHI was created to measure Chinese proficiency rather than teach Chinese, so think of it as a way to test your current level, not a tool for regular study or practice. Research found a strong relationship between ClozCHI performance and HSK proficiency levels, but a ClozCHI result is not an official HSK score.
