How to Set Up a Chinese Keyboard on Any Device

Adding a Chinese keyboard lets you type Chinese characters without changing your device’s display language. Choose your device below and follow the simple steps to add a Chinese keyboard or input method.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
  3. Tap Add New Keyboard.
  4. Select Chinese, Simplified or Chinese, Traditional.
  5. Choose the keyboard layout you want to use, such as Pinyin-QWERTY.

Mac

  1. Open the Apple menu → System Settings.
  2. Select Keyboard.
  3. Under Text Input, click Edit.
  4. Click the + button and select Chinese, Simplified or Chinese, Traditional.
  5. Choose an input method, such as Pinyin, and click Add.

Android

  1. Make sure Gboard is installed on your phone or tablet.
  2. Open an app where you can type and bring up the keyboard.
  3. Tap Settings → Languages → Add keyboard.
  4. Select Chinese and choose the layout you want to use.
  5. Tap Done.

Windows

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Time & language → Language & region.
  3. Click Add a language.
  4. Search for and select the Chinese language you want, then follow the prompts to install it.
  5. Use Microsoft Pinyin to type Simplified Chinese with Pinyin.

Chromebook

  1. Select the time at the bottom right of the screen.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Under Device, select Keyboard → Change input settings.
  4. Under Input methods, select Add.
  5. Choose the Chinese input method you want to use.
